  1. Returning students, you do not have to see your advisor for Mandatory Advising!  Please check an email from your advisor on Wednesday afternoon for CMSC (3 or 4 credit) Permission Form for Spring 2025
  2. ACES Minor Application is now OPEN! – Applications are due October 20, 2024.

CS Announcement for the week of 9/30/2024

1.  Schedule your Mandatory Advising if you are required.  If you are new to CS program this semester, Mandatory Advising is required.    

2. Keep an eye out for the Computer Science Ambassador Application.

3. Check your Terpmail! The CSN went out today. 

4. Fall 2024 CS Info Week (10/21/24 to 10/25/24) is coming!

5. Winter 2025 Registration starts on October 15, 2024.  Please email your advisor for CS course permissions. 

 

Career Fairs on Campus this Week!

If you were unable to register for the CS Career Fair by the 6AM deadline this morning, there are three other career fairs happening on campus this week in Stamp. Many of the same employers from the CS career fair will be in attendance.

9/24- 11am-4pm (STEM Focus)

9/25- 11am-4pm (STEM Focus)

9/26 11am-4pm (All Industries)

1-Resume Review today, Monday, September 16, 2024, in the Antonov Auditorium, Iribe Center, from 5:30pm-7:45pm. YOU MUST HAVE A HARD COPY OF YOUR RESUME TO ATTEND! Email kkyle@ umd.edu if you need printing assistance. 

 

2-Computer Science Career & Internship Fair | Fall 2024 will be held Monday, September 23, 2024 in Adele H. Stamp Student Union, from 11:00 am - 6:00 pm

 

3-University Fall 2024 Career & Internship Fair will be in STAMP Student Union on Tuesday, September 24, 2024(STEM); Wednesday, September 25, 2024 (STEM); and  Thursday, September 26, 2024 (All Majors).

 

4-Latine Heritage Month celebration from September 15th to October 15th!

7-Winter 2025 courses are now live on Testudo; registration for Winter 2025 will open on October 15, 2024. The Spring 2025 schedule of classes will be available starting Friday, September 20th.

1. End of schedule adjustment for the Fall 2024 semester TODAY, September 9, 2024. (You can drop up to 4 credits with a W grade until Nov. 4)

2.  The deadline for Fall 2024 Graduation Application is also TODAY, September 9, 2024.

Event Spotlight for the Week of 9/3

Hey CS Majors! If you are planning to study abroad in the future, or would like more information you can attend the Study Abroad Fair on Wednesday September 4 in the Grand Ballroom, Stamp Student Union from 2 pm - 5 pm.

 

Additionally, if you are interested in joining a campus group or organization you can attend the First Look Fair on Friday, September 6 on McKeldin Mall from 10 am - 3 pm.

 

NextNOW Fest is going on between September 4 and 10! On September 4, the UMD Regenerate! Orchestra will be performing in the Iribe Center

Newly Added CMSC Courses / Open Seats

Are you looking for a second or third CMSC course to add to your schedule this fall? A few more courses have been added to the Schedule of Classes over the summer, and there are a number of courses with open seats! If you are on a long waitlist for other CMSC4XX courses, we encourage you to look into other options.

  • CMSC335 Web Application Development with JavaScript
  • CMSC411 Computer Systems Architecture
  • CMSC412 Operating Systems
  • CMSC433 Programming Language Technologies and Paradigms
  • CMSC451 Design and Analysis of Computer Algorithms

There are also two adjustments to our STIC offerings:
  • CMSC398U: Secure Multiparty Computation (CMSC456 is no longer a required prerequisite)
  • CMSC398V: Introduction to React (newly added)
Please make sure you meet the prerequisite requirements for the course(s) you wish to add, and contact your assigned Academic Advisor for course permission.

Fall 2024 Academic Updates (as of 5/30/24)

New Courses added to the Fall 2024 Schedule

  • CMSC335 0201 has been scheduled for TuTh 8:00am - 9:15am
  • CMSC433 0101 has been scheduled for MW 3:30pm - 4:45pm
  • CMSC351 0501 has been scheduled for MWF 10:00am - 10:50am
  • CMSC451 0301 has been scheduled for TuTh 2:00pm - 3:15pm

Fall 2024 Upper Level Waitlist Caps Removed

All of our upper level CMSC courses (excluding CMSC330, CMSC351, and the rest of our foundation courses) have had their waitlist caps removed. Please note that the CS Department recommends that students should register for open courses for their first two CMSC course permissions.


MATH243 Is Not Approved for CS Major or CMSC Prerequisites

MATH243 Introduction to Linear Algebra and Differential Equations cannot be used as a substitute linear algebra course for any CS major requirements and/or CMSC course prerequisites. Listed below are the only approved linear algebra courses for major requirements or CMSC prerequisites.

 

  • MATH 240 (4) Linear Algebra
  • MATH 461 (3) Linear Algebra for Scientists and Engineers
  • MATH 341 (4) Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations II (only if completed after MATH340 (4) Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations I)

 

Summer 2024 Course Updates

CMSC388J: Building Secure Web Applications (1-credit STIC) has been added to the Schedule of Classes during Summer Session II.
