The following students are currently computer science majors. Each of these students has taken advantage of one or more of the numerous unique experiences that UMCP has to offer. Please feel free to contact any of these students.

Andy
Home Town: Towson, MD
High School: Towson High School
Class Standing: Senior
Major: Computer Science and Math
Email: andypar@umd.edu

I entered UMD as a computer science major, and quickly picked up math as well. I’ve focused on theoretical (and mathematical!) computer science, dealing with formulating algorithms and cryptography. I spent last fall in a math study abroad program in Budapest and now I’m applying what I learned there to my research with a computer science professor.

After graduating high school I took two years off before coming to college. I commute to campus from my home in Columbia. Originally I came in as a computer engineer major, but switched to computer science with an upper level course concentration in Business. I am a member of the University Honors Community and treasurer of Association for Women in Computing (AWC). I have worked with Prof. Bill Pugh here at UMD on a static code analysis project called Find Bugs. This past summer I interned at Oil Price Information Services (OPIS) under the Corporate Scholars program.

Hey everyone, I’m a junior here at UMCP shooting for a double degree in Math and CS. I’m involved in a bunch of different programs here like Gemstone, University Honors, Corporate Scholars, and URAP. Inside the CS department I’m working on an independent research project with a professor for CS Honors and was an undergraduate TA. I’ve worked at a bunch of different places, too, like NSA, Johns Hopkins APL, SAIC, and this summer I’m working at Microsoft. I guess that sounds like a lot of stuff to have packed in each semester, but I still manage to get out thankfully :)

I recently switched from Computer Engineering to Computer Science with a concentration in history. I’m in the University Honors program. In addition to classes, I am the treasurer on the Sailing Team. I have also participated in HKN, Ballroom Dancing, and Society of Women Engineers. I have interned for the Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel for the past three years. During the school year, I work with Alison Druin through the Human Computer Interaction Laboratory. I love meeting new people so feel free to hit me up!

Mike
Home Town: Germantown
High School: Northwest ‘04
Major(s): Computer Science & Economics (Double Degree)
Class Standing: Senior
Email: ramiz@umd.edu

Over the three years that I’ve spent at College Park I have come to appreciate the depth of knowledge offered by the Computer Science department. However I did not stop there. I have also pursued a long time interest in the field of Economics and team research as offered by the Gemstone Program at the University of Maryland. I do not believe in the extreme specialization that is very common place n today society, rather I strive to be a student of many disciplines. I am also an employee with Raytheon Solipsys-a wholly owned subsidiary of Raytheon. Thanks to my diligence and the outstanding support of the Computer Science faculty at the University of Maryland I have been a very welcome addition to my department at Solipsys-where I have been working for a little bit more than a year.
Lynn
Home Town: Columbia, Maryland
High School: Oakland Mills High School
Majors(s): Computer Science and Music (piano)
Class Standing: Senior

I’m a super senior here at College Park. I’m taking 5 years to graduate because of my double degrees in Music and Computer Science. I like to say I’m majoring in “keyboards.” Haha… get it? I’m secretary for the Association for Women in Computer Science and I’m also involved in University and Departmental honors. I’ve sung in several of the choruses at UM and also sing in an acapella madrigal group off campus. This past summer I worked as an intern at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab.

I have already published two paper in conference proceedings, and I have two papers pending publication in research journals. I am excited about research and think everybody should do it!

Daniel
Home Town: Annapolis, MD
High School: Annapolis High School
Class Standing: Senior
Major: Computer Science and Chinese
Email: dhackner AT umd D0T edu

I am currently in my fourth year at Maryland and I’ve taken classes in pretty much every major available. I am in the process of learning Chinese as well. In my spare time I am an officer in the University of Maryland: Terpwushu Club, a Chinese martial arts club, and I also enjoy wakeboarding and motorcycles. Computer science is a great major as long as you are diligent about getting your work done. You can absolutely still have a social life, it’s just a balancing act with the course load. Feel free to email me for advice or questions about Computer Science as a major.

High School: Montgomery HS
Class Standing: Senior
Major: Computer Science
Email: cpowers3@umd.edu

Born and raised in the Philippines, I came to the US when I was 17. After finishing HS, I joined the US Navy and was trained as a linguist. My final duty station was at the RSOC in Hawaii from 2000 to 2003. While serving in the military, I began taking computer science courses from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. After separating from 5 years of Active Duty, I moved to Maryland in 2004 and decided to continue my degree in computer science and try to get into medical school. In the summer of 2006, I was offered an internship at the NIH, NIDDK, Laboratory of Biomolecular Modeling where I did some research in energy pathways. Currently, I am continuing my research with NIH, as well as actively volunteering at the Washington Cancer Institute. I hope someday to obtain my M.D. Ph.D. degree.
