Are you ready to test your coding skills? Join Google Code Jam, a competition where programmers and students solve complex coding challenges in a limited amount of time. Winners get cash prizes and a trip to a local Google office. Last year, one competitor even went on to intern at Google and helped to create a new version of Google Sky.
We began offering the Google Code Jam in 2003 as a great way for Google to support competitive programming around the world. Those earlier contests were powered by TopCoder, but we have been developing a platform to support coding competitions — and now we are excited to produce our own Google Code Jam.
The new competition is planned for the end of Summer 2008, and we hope you’ll join us and your fellow computer science students in this challenge. If you’re interested, sign up for future announcements and updates about the contest at: http://groups.google.com/group/codejam-announce.
We’re excited about Google Code Jam 2008, and we hope to see you at the finals!
Sincerely,
Google’s Code Jam Team

The CS Department co-sponsors DC Area Botball, a nonprofit autonomous lego robotics tournament for kids in middle and high school. The competition involves some 50 student teams in the area. See http://www.botball.org/current-season/GDC/
Botball BADLY NEEDS VOLUNTEERS to help in the one-day tournament THIS SATURDAY (May 3). It’s fun and you get a free t-shirt out of it and some free pizza usually too. And you get to see lots of highly innovative lego robot entries from students. You don’t need to know anything about robotics. We have student volunteers repeatedly showing up year after year because they enjoy it so much. Please come help out!
The competition is at Ritchie Coliseum at the University of Maryland. For instructions to get there, see http://www.cs.umd.edu/~jmaybury/KIPR/BB2007/tournament.html
Volunteers should arrive around 9AM. It’d help if you sent mail to Marci Corey (mcorey@kipr.org) and let her know, but if you forget, still come
anyway. Volunteers could also be used on Friday afternoon to help with set up.
First take a deep breath and relax. If you take things in perspective things could be worse and you have a 99.9999% chance you will survive.
Let go of any remorse you may feel that you didn’t get it done early. This will only bog you down.
If you have been going to the gym or doing something that helps you relax, do not cut it out. That extra hour doesn’t make as big a difference as the time used to relax or not worry.
Write down everything that has to be done and make a schedule of when to do it all.
If you find yourself done early, take that extra time to relax and rejuvenate for the next day.
1337 5P33K is a tip of the week series written by people who were once in your shoes. Feel free to post a comment and if you have a question email Brandi Adams at bkadams@cs.umd.edu and she and I will do our best to find the answer.
For best consideration, please make sure that you fill out all of the necessary applications.
