The Computer Science Department and our College make available to our students a variety of awards and scholarships which recognize and encourage excellence in the field. We are all especially grateful to the generous donors who make these opportunities possible!

Applicants must meet the following requirements for department scholarships:

  • Full time student, undergraduate degree seeking student
  • Computer Science Major
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Unless otherwise indicated, must have completed two of (CMSC311, CMSC330, CMSC351)

Scholarships listed below aren’t the only ones available. The college also provides opportunities, so all students regardless of GPA and class standing are encouraged to apply to the CMPS dean’s office scholarships. Except as noted otherwise, all scholarships applications processed through the Computer Science Department will be due no later than March 24th, 2008. Applications (using the form linked below) should be submitted to the undergraduate office (AVW 1119). The awards will be announced during the computer science award ceremony in spring semester.

The scholarships plus number of awards anticipated for 2008 are as below. Unless indicated otherwise, funds are typically applied to the student account, with half given in the fall semester and half in the spring.

John Gannon Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $3,000
  • Number of awards: up to two
  • Description:
    The purpose of this scholarship is to provide recognition and financial support to outstanding students in the department of computer science in the College of Computer, Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park. Recipients will be selected by the Department of Computer Science Scholarship Committee based on demonstrated potential for excellence in all of research, teaching and service. Requires written letter of application for student to express goals in the above, plus names of faculty for references. After screening for eligibility, the committee may call finalists for a personal interview.

John Gannon Portal Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $1,000
  • Number of Awards: up to six
  • The open goal of this program is to invest in and build a league of future Gannon Scholars. As such, the same criteria and procedures for selecting Gannon Scholars will apply to Portal Scholarships except:
    (a) the scholarship is open to students who have not yet completed the 300-level sequence at the time of application, and
    (b) a correspondingly lower standard for what constitutes a “demonstrated potential” can apply.As with the Gannon Scholars, we will require a written letter of application for student to express goals i n the above.

Guy Wassertzug/InfoStructures, Inc. Computer Science Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $2,000
  • Number of awards: one
  • Description:
    Guy Wassertzug is a 1988 graduate of the University of Maryland and President and Chief Executive Officer of InfoStructures. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide a scholarship for computer science majors in the College of Computer, Mathematical and Physical Sciences. In addition, recipients must have demonstrated a serious interest in advancing the role of women in the academic and professional field of computer science a nd must demonstrate their experience in a leadership role in extracurricular activities (other than Greek life), including but not limited to sports, student organizations or student government.

Raj Khera and Tripti Sinha Scholarship in Computer Science

  • Award Amount: $1,500
  • Number of awards: one
  • The scholarship will be based on merit and financial need.

Christopher David Malter Memorial Scholarship Award amount: $1,000

  • Number of Awards: one
  • Description:
    Christopher David Malter was a computer science major at UMCP who graduated in May 1999. His parents have established this scholarship in his honor after he passed away. The scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate computer science student based on academic merit.
