The Computer Science Department and our College make available to our students a variety of awards and scholarships which recognize and encourage excellence in the field. We are all especially grateful to the generous donors who make these opportunities possible.The scholarships listed below are not the only ones available. The College also provides opportunities, so all students regardless of GPA and class standing are encouraged to apply to the CMPS dean’s office scholarships. For more information, please see the CMPS web site.You should also monitor the campus list national scholarships available.

ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants must meet the following requirements for Computer Science Department scholarships:

  • Full time undergraduate degree seeking student
  • Computer Science Major
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or above

HOW TO APPLY:

Except as noted otherwise, all scholarship applications processed through the Computer Science Department will be due no later than March 23, 2010. Applications (using the web form) should be submitted electronically. The awards will be announced near the end of the spring semester.


John D. Gannon Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $3,000
  • Number of awards: up to three
  • Description: The purpose of this scholarship is to provide recognition and financial support to outstanding undergraduate students in the Department of Computer Science based on academic merit with preference given to students who have demonstrated aptitude for and commitment to teaching and research.

Gannon Portal Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $1,000
  • Number of Awards: up to seven
  • Description: The purpose of this scholarship is to provide recognition and financial support to outstanding undergraduate students in the Department of Computer Science based on academic merit with preference given to students who have demonstrated aptitude for and commitment to teaching and research.


Guy Wassertzug/InfoStructures, Inc. Computer Science Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $2,000
  • Number of awards: one
  • Description: Guy Wassertzug is a 1988 graduate of the University of Maryland and President and Chief Executive Officer of InfoStructures, Inc. Recipients must have demonstrated a serious interest in advancing the role of women in the academic and professional field of computer science and must demonstrate their experience in a leadership role in extracurricular activities (other than Greek life), including but not limited to sports, student organizations or student government.

Raj Khera and Tripti Sinha Scholarship in Computer Science

  • Award Amount: $1,500
  • Number of awards: one
  • Description: Dheeraj Khera and Tripti Sinha are UMCP alumni who established a scholarship to  support students in the Department of Computer Science. The scholarship will be based  on merit and financial need.


Christopher David Malter Memorial Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $1,000
  • Number of Awards: one
  • Description:
    Christopher David Malter was a computer science major at UMCP who graduated in May 1999. His parents established this scholarship in his honor after he passed away. The scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate computer science student based on academic merit.
