A student intern position is open immediately at the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) of University of Maryland. The successful applicant will work with a team of scientists on a Chesapeake Bay Forecast System project. The position is within the terrestrial modeling team whose task is to adopt a hydrological and water quality model for the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The main duty of the position is to develop and maintain an automated data processing system in a linux environment. This position requires strong skills in scientific programming (Fortran, C/C++, Python, or other languages) and script programming (bash, sh, perl, or other scripting languages). The preferred background includes knowledge of statistics and applied college math, experience in large data set processing, data manipulation, and automated online data acquisition through FTP or wget. The ability to work independently and to learn quickly is highly desired. This is a well paid position with a time requirement of 20 hours per week during semesters and full-time during summer.
