Network Capacity Planning – Database/Software Engineering
Summary: Design, develop, and administer a data mart of systems performance data using Microsoft Business Intelligence tools to support network capacity planning.

This is a part-time position supporting the network capacity planning activities within the Engineering organization on the Lockheed Martin HUD Information Technology Service (HITS) Program in Lanham, MD.  Activities include collection of system performance data from a variety of sources, managing a database of historical performance data, developing a data mart/data warehouse structure of system performance data using data cubes, and developing data analysis and reporting routines. The position is for up to 20 hours per week and allows a flexible work schedule. The initial period is through the summer with a good likelihood of continuation into the fall.

 

The processing environment is the Microsoft Business Intelligence suite: SQL Server, Integration Services, and Reporting Services on Windows 2003 servers.

 Helpful analytical skills include

-         Process and data (semantic) model representations (ie Flow Diagrams, Entity Relationship diagrams)

-         Requirements and design of application software.

-         Database integration and data warehouse concepts

-         General data communication network concepts and practices.

 Helpful technical skills include

-         SQL, especially Transact SQL

-         SQL Server database components such as stored procedure and trigger design.

-         SQL Server Integration Services.

-         Design of data marts using data cubes.

-         Visual Studio, VB scripting and web component usage

-         Excel, Access

 This position requires the ability to work independently, think creatively, and communicate effectively.

Helpful analytical skills include

-         Process and data (semantic) model representations (ie Flow Diagrams, Entity Relationship diagrams)

-         Basic statistical analysis concepts such as familiarity with distributions, confidence levels, and control charts.

-         General data communication network concepts and practices.

-         General systems theory and design of analytical models for predictive behavior.

Helpful technical skills include

-         SQL, especially Transact SQL

-         Statistical software such as Minitab or Statistica

-         Network simulation software such as OpNet

-         Excel, Access
