The Scholastic Transitions Educational Program (STEP) is offering employment to three undergraduate students (Junior or Senior year status) to provide peer mentorship within the 2008 summer residential program. These students will be expected to work continuously throughout a three-week residential program, attending classes, modeling appropriate behavior, supervising students, and assisting with the program implementation.
The STEP program is a living and learning community for incoming freshmen admitted to the University of Maryland, and is a collaboration between the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Letters and Sciences, and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The program will run from Sunday, July 13 through Friday, August 1, 2008.
Mentors must report to campus on July 13, 2008 no later than 9:00am for the program opening.
POSITION TITLE: STEP Program Mentor (3)
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Required - Strong working knowledge of Math115 or higher curriculum with an earned grade of 3.0 in math115 or higher
• Must be a currently enrolled junior or senior at the University of Maryland in good academic standing; a 2.5 or higher cumulative grade point average; can be a graduate student
• Successful completion of EDCP 108M or 108B preferred
• Must show evidence of campus involvement
• Must have familiarity with campus resources
• Strong leadership skills, and the willingness to work as a team member
• Good communication skills, and the ability to liaison with various departments on-campus
• Possess a genuine interest in teaching first time freshmen
RESPONSIBILITIES: STEP mentors provide daily, academic support and transition to a group of 50 incoming freshmen. Additionally, STEP mentors reside in the STEP residence hall with the program participants. Work hours are continuous throughout the day and evening hours, 7 days/week for the duration of the 3 week STEP program. Mentors assist resident assistants with oversight after curfew hours, as needed, and perform the following duties:
• Participate in all trainings and staff meetings both prior to, and during the STEP summer component
• Mentor approximately 50 STEP Scholars, as appropriate.
• Accompany and shadow students to ALL STEP activities throughout the 3 weeks.
• Provide academic tutoring to students during the EDCP108M, a math development course and UNIV101, The Student in the University course, as well as provide instructor support in both courses, as needed.
• Provide additional academic tutoring during all regularly scheduled mandatory study tables (Sunday-Thursday evenings).
• Aid in the enrichment of students’ awareness of campus life and resources by facilitating and participating in scheduled activities throughout weekday.
• Attend and participate in weekend activities designed to introduce students to university and local recreational activities (both on and off campus).
• Provide resident hall supervision in tandem with an RA; including working assigned duty hours & helping to monitor student check-in/out procedures; daily and in the evening hours.
• Enforce all policies and procedures of UMD as well as all local, federal and state laws.
• Be sensitive to the learning styles and needs of a diverse student population.
• Model and enforce all STEP program rules and policies.
POSITION AVAILABLE: July 13 - August 1, 2008
SALARY: Mentors will earn a one-time payment of $ 1,700, including housing and meals between July 13th and July 31st . Mentors are welcome to use the university’s recreational facilities outside of scheduled, daily work hours.
